You are limited only by your uncontrolled imagination and lack of attention to the feeling of your wish fulfilled.
– Neville Goddard
I struggled with crippling anxiety and depression for nearly a decade.
There were times when I felt like hopelessness was my best friend. All I wanted to do was sleep, but I couldn’t even do that because my mind was too busy being self-critical.
Everything changed for me when I realized that my words and thoughts greatly influenced my lived experience by raising or lowering my vibrational frequency—the universe’s method of communication. Once I got to the bottom of my subconscious blockages, I made adjustments to my conscious thinking patterns.
Louise L. Hay has an insightful graphic in one of her books, Heal Your Body, that lists physical and emotional illnesses, their probable cause and a corrective new thought pattern for each one.
Under anxiety, the probable cause is listed as “not trusting the flow and process of life.” That was me in a nutshell. I didn’t even trust myself, much less the flow of life. I had to accept myself, have faith in my abilities and remind myself every day that life is a helping hand, not a punch to the gut.
Hay’s affirmation for anxiety is: “I love and approve of myself, and I trust the process of life. I am safe.”
It’s empowering to know that you’re the director of your life and not just an actor in somebody else’s. You have incredible power within; all you need is concentration, faith and a bit of knowledge.
Here are seven tools you can use to harness the power of the conscious mind to reframe your perspective, adjust your subconscious mind, and raise your vibration for healing and vitality.
Make suggestions to your subconscious
Your subconscious mind is wide open to suggestions. It’s so wide open that, like a computer downloading a packaged file, it saves all contents regardless of whether you want it to or not.
This is a double-edged sword. On one side, you could unconsciously manifest everything you don’t want by simply making adverse suggestions or having the “wrong” thoughts. On the other side, when you gain awareness of thought and begin motivating yourself with self-talk, you can create profound changes in your life.
The repetition of conscious suggestions or affirmations imprints a new program in the subconscious mind that will allow you to form new mental, emotional and physical habits.
When a suggestion is repeated with focus, faith and emotion, it gains effectiveness. Little effort is needed, as any tension restricts the flow of energy. If a wrong thought pops into your head during the process, acknowledge it and then plant the seed of correct thought in its ashes.
Assume it’s a “done deal”
Assumption is optimism on steroids. Make your suggestions, and then assume they’ve already checked into the subconscious and are taking a warm bubble bath in the luxury suite that is your mind.
Once you create a thought, it becomes a thread of energy in the mental plane. Like a radio wave, you can’t witness it, you can only harness its energy and experience its effect.
Harnessing thought energy is as simple as taking a step. Here’s how to do it:
- Think something into existence and focus on its effect as a physical feeling—feelings of gratitude, abundance and divine connection work well.
- Take the feeling you’ve focused on and amplify it with mental imagery. For instance, imagine a lone willow tree by a still lake or a soaring eagle above a snow-covered mountain peak.
- Breathe and focus your mind on that blissful feeling.
You can often feel a thought’s effect as chills up the spine or intensified vibrations in your face and body. It’s much easier to assume a thought-of suggestion is a done deal when you feel its physical imprint.
Observe and report subjectively
Everything is what you want it to be. There is no good or bad, right or wrong, hot or cold. You might be wearing four jackets outside and see a guy strolling along in shorts and flip-flops. It’s all relative.
Why not observe your environment and frame it in a way that suits you?
Imagine you’re taking a light jog through the neighbourhood park. You’re listening to high-frequency vibrations, maybe some Solfeggio for cell regeneration. You’re lost in your void when you suddenly feel a presence. You look up and see an old man staring at you. You could think any number of things—he’s suspicious of me, he thinks my shorts are too short, he doesn’t want me here.
The truth is, this man and his thoughts about you mean very little. Your reaction to them means much more. Is your desired mental state one of insecurity and fear? If not, make an optimistic suggestion to yourself about this man. You could even invent a funny story about him in your mind.
Then, smile and wave. Who knows? He might wave back.
Connect with the Universal Mind
Moreover, Spirit, or Universal Mind, cannot be conceived of as “thinking” in the sense of reasoning or understanding by Intellect.
– William Walker Atkinson
We all exist within the Universal Mind. While we have the capacity for individual thought, what we think of as the mind is only a tiny piece of a grand interconnected mental puzzle. Unlike the other six tools outlined here, we can’t access this piece of ourselves through conscious thought.
A sharp, consistent mindfulness practice will allow you to be aware of signs transmitted from the Universal Mind. It’s an intuitive sense that picks up subtle meanings without having to analyze them. Like the sudden realization that you love to write and want to write forever, you just know.
Maybe one sunny afternoon during your childhood, you took a school trip to the community library. The moment you opened a dusty book on the last shelf in the last row, a longing swept over you and you knew that one day you’d author a book. That’s the Universal Mind communicating with you.
The tricky part about living in the Universal Mind is that you’re exposed to other people’s thoughts and their potentially harmful effects. Have you ever entered a household and immediately felt negative thought energy? Before anyone even said a word, you already knew that the house’s collective mindset was clinging to the lowest possible vibration?
In scenarios like this, you can suggest to yourself, “I’m not affected by negative suggestions.” Know it, feel it and keep it moving.
Attract abundance with abundant thinking
If you trust yourself, you gain trust from those around you. If you love yourself, you find love in unexpected places. You attract what you embody.
Some people constantly talk about their illnesses. They complain about this symptom and that symptom. They recount all the years of suffering without any hope of it ever ending. It’s almost as if the suffering has become a loyal friend and they can’t bear to say goodbye. They’ve been captured by the low mental vibration of sickness, so sickness is what they’ve become.
Everything is in a constant state of vibration, even our thoughts, and thought vibrations have the powerful ability to attract like vibrations. When you have a high-vibe mental attitude of compassion, gratitude and optimism, you tend to attract like-minded people into your life.
Awareness of thought is critical to not only changing your emotional state and physical body, but also transforming your lived experience.
Understand that there are no coincidences
Life is a series of events managed by Universal Law. Think of life as the orchestra and Universal Law as the composer, only the composer is all-powerful and perfect in every way. Understand the composer’s movements and mannerisms, and you can fine-tune your rhythm and pace.
The Law of Cause and Effect applies to the mental plane just as it applies to the physical. Every thought unleashes a series of events. You may not have control over the events, but you have power over your thoughts.
When you become conscious of how you think, you can use this law to alter life events, but know that no series of causes and events happens by chance. Every experience has a purpose.
You may recall times when your self-sabotaging thoughts facilitated deceptions or heartbreaks. Maybe you internalized the idea that you’d never be loved, and you carried this burden with you in your daily thoughts. Then, like magic, your focused energy on the absence of love gave you just that. Now, you can look back and understand that you needed to love yourself before you could receive someone else’s love.
Believe in miracles and blessings
As thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee.
– Jesus
I used to think that belief was ridiculous. How could believing in something help you make it a reality? No, it wasn’t possible. I was pessimistic and closed-minded.
The simple act of changing your perspective to an optimistic one will allow you to view belief like you’d view an unheard-of but severely underrated basketball player—as an intriguing prospect.
As Neville Goddard said, “Prayer [is] the art of believing what is denied by the senses.” It’s a mental exercise in which you understand what is, but choose to see what ought to be.
The truth is that thoughts and beliefs hold weight here in the Universal Mind. They’re energy in motion, just like a volt of electricity is. When you give attention to that energy and believe in its power, strange things start to happen.
Life turns into a series of miracles and blessings. Health and vitality become natural states of existence. Joy and peace show up as if they never left.
