Lagom [Swedish]: Not too little, not too much.
Sweden’s history has seen many ups and downs, just like most countries, but few nations have found the kind of stability that Sweden has. The last war it was involved in occurred in 1814, and since then, the country has remained remarkably peaceful. This long period of neutrality contributed to a unique cultural mindset that’s all about balance—and at the heart of this is the concept of Lagom.
The word “Lagom” didn’t initially carry the meaning it holds today. Over the past two centuries, however, it has grown deeply ingrained in Swedish culture and shapes the way people live and think.
What is a “Lagom” life?
Now that we’ve briefly touched on the history of Lagom, let’s explore what it looks like in everyday life.
Living in balance, embracing simplicity and focusing on the essentials—Lagom is about finding harmony in your daily routine. It’s not about seeking perfection, but about contentment with “just enough.” It’s living in a way that doesn’t overextend you, mentally or physically, and doesn’t contribute to the stresses of modern life.
But how can you incorporate Lagom into your life? Here are five simple ways to get you started.
Don’t overcommit to social activities
If you’re feeling drained or just need some time alone, it’s OK to say no to social plans. In today’s busy world, it’s easy to feel pressured to constantly engage, but forcing yourself to do something you’re not up for won’t improve your mood.
In Sweden, there’s a respect for personal space and quiet time. You can prioritize your mental health by taking time for yourself when you need it, even if that means skipping a gathering.
Embrace quality over quantity when it comes to stuff
It’s easy to get swept up in consumerism. We’ve all added items to an online shopping cart, convinced we need them, only to close the tab and feel better for not buying them.
Lagom encourages you to be mindful of your consumption. Instead of filling your cart with items you don’t truly need, focus on buying fewer things that are of higher quality and will last. Whether it’s clothes, gadgets or home items, choose wisely. A few well-made pieces can bring long-term satisfaction, and your home will feel more peaceful without excess clutter.
Surround yourself with quality relationships
Have you ever found yourself feeling down or needing help, but the people around you didn’t seem to offer the support you needed? Or perhaps you’ve been in situations where you felt unheard, even when you were surrounded by people?
Lagom teaches us that quality is more important than quantity—not just with things, but with relationships. Instead of focusing on the number of friends or acquaintances you have, prioritize the people who truly make you feel supported and valued.
Find those one or two people who truly enrich your life. These are the people you can lean on when times are tough, and who will help you grow as a person in return.
Don’t compare yourself to others
In many places, there’s an overwhelming pressure to keep up appearances, whether that means buying the latest gadgets or wearing expensive brands to show off to others. In Sweden, though, there’s a much stronger focus on modesty. Most Swedes are in the middle class, and flaunting wealth isn’t a common practice.
Take a stroll through any Swedish neighbourhood, and you’ll see new cars parked next to old ones without any apparent judgment. The person driving the new car doesn’t look down on the person with the 20-year-old Volvo. This is Lagom in action: It’s not about proving anything to others. It’s about doing what makes you happy.
Don’t waste energy on comparing yourself to others or trying to impress anyone. Focus on what makes you feel fulfilled and content. True happiness comes from within, not from the opinions of others.
Take care of yourself—and your mind
Mental health is just as important as physical health. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get overwhelmed, but the Lagom way is about finding balance. Taking time for yourself, whether that’s through mindfulness, rest or simply stepping away from stressful situations, can help you clear your mind and restore your energy.
Remember: You don’t need to be constantly busy to be productive. Embrace the moments of calm and use them to recharge.
“Lagom” living is mindful living
The strategies described above aren’t strict rules—just guidelines that many people in Sweden live by. Lagom is a flexible philosophy that encourages simplicity, balance and mindfulness. Take what resonates with you and use it to enhance your life in the ways that work best for your situation.
