Remembering birthdays. Checking in on everyone. Managing emotions in the room. Caring for children, partners, parents, friends, colleagues and communities. Trying to be successful while also being present. Trying to look like we’re managing it all—even when, underneath the face we’re presenting to the world, we’re wondering when we’ll finally have a moment to breathe.

Somewhere along the way, many women learn to offer compassion to everyone except themselves.

We tell our friends:

“You’re doing enough.”

“You don’t have to have it all figured out.”

“Be gentle with yourself.”

“You deserve rest.”

But when it comes to us, the language can suddenly change. We might tell ourselves:

“I should be further ahead.”

“Why can’t I handle this better?”

“I should have known.”

“I need to get myself together.”

We can become our own harshest critics, while simultaneously being the person everyone else turns to for kindness.

Self-compassion isn’t selfish

Self-compassion asks us to change that relationship with ourselves.

It doesn’t mean making excuses, avoiding responsibility or giving up on growth. It means learning to meet ourselves with the same understanding we’d naturally offer someone we love.

It means recognizing that being tired doesn’t make us weak. That needing help doesn’t make us incapable. That making a mistake doesn’t make us a failure. That having a difficult season doesn’t mean we’re doing life wrong.

For women especially, this can be a profound shift. We’ve often been taught, directly or indirectly, that our value comes from what we provide to others. We become caregivers, organizers, supporters, listeners, nurturers and problem-solvers.

But we’re human beings before we’re anything for anyone else. We need care, too.

We weren’t meant to do everything alone

Self-compassion and connection are deeply intertwined.

Sometimes the most compassionate thing we can do is stop pretending we’re OK when we aren’t. To say, “I’m struggling.” To call the friend we haven’t spoken to in months. To sit with another woman without needing to fix anything. To share the messy, unfinished, imperfect parts of ourselves and discover that we aren’t the only ones carrying them.

There is something healing about being witnessed without judgment, and women need spaces where they don’t have to perform. Spaces where they don’t have to be the strong one. Spaces where they can laugh, cry, be uncertain, change their minds, speak honestly and simply exist.

Connection reminds us that our struggles aren’t evidence that something is wrong with us. Sometimes they’re evidence that we’re human.

The loneliness we don’t always talk about

We can be surrounded by people and still feel deeply alone. We can have hundreds of contacts in our phones and no one we feel comfortable calling when we’re falling apart. We can spend our days communicating with others while rarely feeling truly known.

This is why meaningful connection matters so much. Not just social connection, but authentic connection. The kind where we can put down the polished version of ourselves. The kind where someone asks, “How are you really doing?” and has the time and willingness to listen to the answer. The kind where we don’t have to earn belonging by being useful.

Softening our expectations

What if this season of your life doesn’t require you to become more? What if it asks you to be gentler?

Perhaps you don’t need another productivity system. Perhaps you need rest.

Perhaps you don’t need to fix every part of yourself. Perhaps you need to remember that you’re already worthy of kindness.

Perhaps you don’t need to find more people. Perhaps you need to allow one or two people to know you more deeply.

Perhaps you don’t need to hold everything together. Perhaps you need somewhere safe enough to let something go.

Self-compassion gives us permission to pause and ask a different question, which I’ll explain in detail below.

“What do I need right now?”

Not: “What does everyone else need from me?” Not: “What would make me more productive?” Not: “What would make me easier to love?”

Simply: “What do I need?”

Sometimes the answer will be practical: Rest. A boundary. A meal. A walk. A conversation. Professional support.

Sometimes it’ll be emotional: reassurance, understanding, forgiveness or permission to grieve.

And sometimes the answer will simply be connection: A hand to hold. A cup of tea with a friend. A conversation that lasts longer than 10 minutes. A room where you don’t have to pretend.

Let this be an invitation

For the women reading this, perhaps today can be an invitation to practice a different kind of strength: The strength to be honest. The strength to receive. The strength to ask for help. The strength to stop measuring your worth by how much you can carry. The strength to speak to yourself with tenderness. And the strength we all need to reach towards one another.

Because we don’t need perfect lives to experience meaningful connection. We need honesty. We need presence. We need compassion. And we need spaces where women can remind one another that:

You’re not alone.

You don’t have to do everything.

You’re allowed to rest.

You’re allowed to need.

You’re allowed to be exactly where you are.

Maybe self-compassion isn’t about learning to love every part of ourselves. Maybe it begins much more simply.

It begins with putting down the judgment, taking a breath, placing one’s hand over one’s heart and saying:

“I am human. I am learning. I am allowed to be gentle with myself.”

And perhaps, when we learn to offer that kindness inward, we’ll become even more capable of offering something beautiful outward: connection without judgment, community without comparison and compassion without conditions.

«RELATED READ» THE MISSING PIECE OF SELF-CARE: Without self-compassion, it won’t last»

image: Pixabay

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that many women know well.
